At a loose end this morning, I remembered that I’d read about tadpoles liking cucumber. I checked out the details and read that you need to cut off the dark green outer skin and then float thin slices onto the water surface. So I ate the ones I’d already sliced, prepared a few slices properly and then headed down the garden to see what happened.
Just the same as the tadpole food, they seemed uninterested to start with. But before long a feeding frenzy started up. They were nibbling round the edges, biting from underneath and piling on top to get their turn at the tasty circles.
Where several tadpoles had latched on at one side, their tails acted like outboard motors and the cucumber slices were propelled across the pond like boats. Others looked like pontoons as more and more tadpoles swam on top. It was really cold and I hadn’t got a coat on but I couldn’t leave for ages, it was so much fun to watch.
