By March this year I had begun to think about the practicalities of frogs ever finding my pond on their own. The obstacles are quite daunting, given that the garden is much higher than the lane with several steep steps to negotiate.

So the answer was to introduce some frogspawn. I Googled the topic and discovered that it is not ideal to move spawn, but not illegal. I have a contact in the neighbouring village whose slabbed water feature hosts a spawning frenzy every year, so I got in touch. Just a few days later, she called and I was round there in minutes with a large bucket, excited. The spawn flopped into my pond and settled into three big clumps. Sadly, the idea for this blog didn’t occur to me at the time so I didn’t take any pictures.
I started recording progress on the 9th of April, once the tadpoles had all spawned and I started to spend time by the pond each day watching the activity.
