At feeding time this evening, some tadpoles were very close to the surface. They were almost out of the water and it stretched like jelly over their backs as they wriggled and jostled for position on the barely submerged pebbles. I’d read that they prefer to feed at depth to avoid predation, so I’d scattered some sinking food too. Didn’t seem to make any difference at all. Maybe they’ve become complacent because nothing is eating them yet. Not long after I went inside, a huge black crow wandered over, but only to have a drink.
Speaking of tension, I was telling some of my psychotherapy students about my blog and how relaxing it is to watch nature in action and then write about the details I’ve noticed.* I’m now imagining that they will add it to their lists of things to suggest to clients for CBT action plans. ‘Feeling tense? How about taking delivery of a lump of frog spawn and then obsessing about it for several months?’ I don’t think it will catch on.
*By the way, the camera faff I described in Blog 10 was anything but relaxing and a waste of a whole day. So if anyone has any ideas about how I could get some decent underwater shots, please comment.
