15 Busy around the pond

This morning the tadpoles seemed to be happy doing what they do, so I focused on life in general around the pond.

I noticed that the pond weed is developing into quite a large patch, which is a sign of nutrient-rich water. It’s also a good hiding place for tadpoles. I’ve noticed a couple of dead bodies on the stepping stones, so I think birds or other predators might be having a go at picking a few off. Still, I do need to keep an eye on that pond weed, to keep a good balance.

Pointing my camera in video mode at the surface to capture the activity and buzz around the pool and among the pond weed, I spotted a wasp having a drink.

Busy (and buzzy) around the pond

Then, trying to catch a splash of the pink petals of a red campion for my non-frog gallery, I accidentally found a Harlequin ladybird. Close up, quite magnificent, but sadly not our native bug. This is an invader, native to Asia, first recorded in Britain in 2004.
