17 Leg buds?

Did I see that? Did that tadpole have two tiny pale lumps either side of its tail? Certainly not poo, because that appears on one side only and looks like a long curved cylinder. This looks different and I saw two tadpoles with the same feature. So maybe it’s time for legs at last? See what you think.

Could it be the start of legs?

Here’s some more video of underwater scenes. There are some glimpses of leg-like rear extensions, but mostly it’s still faeces I think. You can also hear more teeth-scraping, some of which is the tadpoles trying to eat the phone case. Close-ups show the tadpoles as lumpy, speckled and increasingly frog-like. The general underwater shots show a green and frondy world that seems quite ethereal, especially in the sunlight. Above water you can see that the foliage around the pond is becoming quite lush. Plenty of places to hide frogs and, judging by the slug trails I find on the stepping stones in the morning (and my poor, decimated hostas), plenty of frog food too. I’ve decided to stop using slug pellets in the garden on the basis that frogs love slugs. At the moment the slugs are winning the battle of the runner bean shoots, so I’m impatient for my slug-hoovers to arrive and restore balance.

Underwater scenes: The talking overheard on one of the clips is the neighbour, not the tadpoles!
