The pond was still murky today so I half drained it using a plastic watering can. I dunked the can, bringing up water from the bottom and a few tadpoles. Then I poured the water through a sieve into a bucket so I could save any escapees and use the water on the surrounding garden.
Most of the caught tadpoles were fairly large with long tails and quite a few had well-developed back legs. I dropped them back in and hoped they weren’t too traumatised. In the process, I spotted one that looked different and realised this was the stage I’d missed while on holiday. A tadpole with full tail, well-developed back legs, and front legs too. Aha!
So here’s the evidence. You are looking at the inside of a plastic kitchen sieve, semi-submerged in the pond and magnified to show the details.
