24 Peter Pan tadpoles?

You’ll notice that I’m excited by developments down at the pond, and I’m spending my time trying to catch glimpses of froglets in transit, capturing video for you when I’m lucky enough to spot them.

It occurred to me today that you might think the pond is now quiet and empty, with all the froglets hiding under pebbles. Not so. There are still hundreds in various states of development. Apparently, some morph later and some wait until the following year, getting a head start on next year’s hatchling. And some never grew up, lacking the necessary gene to change, so called Peter Pan tadpoles.

Well I might have a few of these and some late developers. I’m hoping they’re not banking on this as a survival strategy though, because my pond is too shallow and likely to freeze solid in winter. For various reasons (lack of knowledge being one), I didn’t dig down to the recommended depth. So I’m hoping the majority get a shift on soon to avoid a chilly demise. Anyway, here’s a clip to show that the pond is busy…

Still (not so still) in the pond
