26 The birds

Aha! Now I see what’s going on when I’m busy elsewhere. The word is getting round that the pond is the place for a quick bath and a quick snack, provided you can manage the slippery pebbles and a bit of competition at times. The trail camera has captured the usual suspects who can be seen in and around our garden, including pigeons, blue tits, coal tits and a magpie.

In the videos, if you have a sharp eye, you can spot a robin making a fast getaway with a tadpole and a blackbird beak in the bottom of a frame, but I think my favourites are the pigeon bath and the blue tit/coal tit outings. Now I have definite proof of predators, I’ve wondered if I should do anything to protect the tadpoles and froglets, but I’ve decided to leave nature to its own rules. If I’m aiming to offer a haven for wildlife, I can’t then be trying to control what it does too much.
