31 Bin day

It’s bin day tomorrow, so I put out the waste food caddy and the refuse bin, locked the garden gate and turned to go back to the house. Then something caught my eye, down by the wheels of the recycling bin (not due to go out for another two weeks due to a new and really confusing collection cycle).

In amongst the cotswold chippings I saw three little frogs, all jumping about, now that I’d moved their hiding place. I was surprised because, to get here, they would have had to hop a long way and down some steep steps. I was also surprised because, in my opinion, the garden is a frog paradise of hidey holes, damp leaves, and little frog homes that I’d made for them, not a stone’s throw from the pond. And yet they chose the wheelie bins. Clearly their idea of a nice place is different to mine; aesthetically, we’re poles apart.

And this highlights a new issue. I’ve been taking care when walking around the pond, but now they could be anywhere and everywhere. Whatever I’m doing in the garden from now on, I’ll have to be looking out for them.

Still, I’m happy because I couldn’t see any frogs around the pond this morning. I rushed in to get my phone and captured some interesting video. I got a close-up clip of a frog blinking, a medium close-up of one catching its dinner, and a shot of a much bigger frog (at least 50% bigger and a different colour) reassuring me that they are thriving and growing, even if they are living under a bin.

Look out for the clip of the frog catching an insect and the final clip shows a frog disappearing behind the bin wheel
