56 Pond snail

Having introduced some predators into the tiny pond, I was checking up today to see how they’re doing. I saw two newts swimming around and looking healthy (as far as I could tell) and four back swimmers, looking very happy, rising to the surface and lurking with menace. Looking more closely, I found a pond snail very busy, hoovering up something I couldn’t see. I was interested to see that it looked a bit like a hovercraft, sliding quite quickly over the pond surface.

Now, bear in mind that the pond snail is the size of my pinkie fingernail. Add to that the fact that I only have my phone, which gets confused about what it’s supposed to be focusing on beneath the water’s surface.

Then view these clips. Suddenly the innocuous pond snail looks like a purposeful eating machine.
