84 Frogs, snails and plant updates

Here’s an update on all things in and around the ponds…

I’ve managed to lower the new lily to the bottom of the deep section of Lily Pond (80cms) and removed the supporting canes. Lily Pond is now looking its best with good shade for tadpoles and healthy water quality.

And here are a few of the flowers emerging in the last few days…

And now to the amphibians and I have a frog sighting in two ponds…

The first was of the frog I’ve seen in Lion Pond recently, disappearing in careful stages behind the Victorian edging-stone steps.

And the second discovery is a much paler frog in the now crystal clear water of Tiny Pond. Finding the pale frog, I looked up frog colours and read that frogs can adjust their colouring to their surroundings. See the Woodland Trust website for more details. So it makes sense that the paler frog was resting on the bottom of Tiny Pond which now has a covering of much paler tiny pebbles. This is just my theory, with no evidence at all of course.

Then on to the snails. Here’s some video I took this morning at Lily Pond. From above the surface, they look much the same and easy to miss, because even the biggest one is only the size of my little fingernail. But when I hold my phone close to the surface I can see that there is quite a variety, each having distinctive colours and markings.

And finally the tadpoles. Here are some in Tiny Pond this morning. No legs yet but they are clearly showing their speckled skin as development continues.

Oh and the hosta again. Still fine (see Blog 80 for details).
