Hot on the heels of Blog 58, another update…

Today we’ve mostly been tidying. I’ve been digging out the roots of yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris), a perennial task if I want to keep it under control. John has been busy pointing brickwork and tidying the log pile.

We had the Beech tree reduced by about 20 feet in January and kept the logs for winter fuel next year, having already stored plenty in my shed for this year. But the Beech logs were just stacked outside, so needed covering to dry out. We’ve now got a neat stack under plastic sheeting, tucked away in the Yard. Nice job for a damp autumn day, although the afternoon ended surprisingly early due to the clocks going back an hour. Why does this still surprise us every year?
Here’s the Beech tree before, during and after the pruning…

Anyway, look who we discovered tucked into the logs. Actually, we found two big frogs. I removed this one, putting it gently into the leaves under the trees. The other one refused to budge and buried itself further under the logs. Nice to know we have at least three mature specimens (including the one by Lily Pond). Bodes well for spawning time next year!
