51 Update around the pond

For this blog, I’ll start with the impressive emperor dragonfly, seen hovering around the pond. It moved so quickly I couldn’t get a shot as it rested briefly on a rock or bulrush stem. I managed to capture it on the the Victoria plum tree close by.

Next, I have a video of a newt I caught in a washing up bowl to show to my grandchildren. Here you can clearly see the arms and legs and this newt still has its frilly gills for breathing underwater.

Then we have a frog. I took these shots on consecutive days in the yard. I think it’s the same frog, in different light, but I’m not sure. I first found it under a broken terracotta pot and then the next day under a rotting tree stump. Also I can’t work out if it is tolerating the slug sitting next to it or whether it is earmarked for eating.

Close up of frog showing heart beat and breathing and a fast getaway!

Update on 7th August… there are definitely at least two big frogs in the yard. Today I’ve found two frogs under two stumps at the same time.
