44 First frog sighting

The tree surgeons arrived in January and did a great job on the Beech and another tree overhanging our yard. We now have a big pile of logs to be sawn into smaller pieces. They also left us the wood chippings. I donated a few bags to friends and family and then let it rest for a while because I’m told it takes up nitrogen from the soil if used to quickly. Last weekend I shifted a builder’s bag of it and mulched a shady area of the garden.

Apart from a few days, it’s been too wet to do any gardening but good weather for frogs of course! Although it’s been quiet in the undergrowth, I’m hopeful that enough have survived the winter to start their job as slug-repellers this season. Today, I borrowed a couple of bricks from the yard to block a gap where rabbits are getting in. Lifting a brick, I disturbed six little frogs. Here’s one that didn’t immediately get away.

Otherwise, I’ve been doing general tidying in the garden, cleaning pond weed and leaves from the pond with my new long-armed pond gloves and pruning hydrangeas.

On Tuesday evening I captured a spectacular sunset. For more pictures, click on Non-Frog Gallery.

And today I walked down to the river Avon to get a break from the laptop. The road to Leek Wootton is flooded, creating a magical scene for me, and a cause for concern for local property owners and road traffic. Here are a couple of pictures.
