41 Stump climbing

The garden is a frog’s paradise at the moment. Everywhere is lush and warm and damp with plenty of places to hide. Plants hang down over the ground creating shady spots.

Leaves from last autumn, once dry and brittle, are now leathery and soft from weeks of rain. It’s difficult to spot the frogs until they move, and when they do move it’s very quick, but I’m finding them all over the garden and snapping the occasional close-up.

The old stumps I moved last year to make way for the pond have become a long term feature of the yard, decaying gently and covered in mosses and fungus. As the bark pulls away and crumbles, it creates more hiding places and ledges for climbing frogs, although they do sometimes struggle to find a foothold.
