6 Close ups, plants and new finds

I took two videos yesterday that I had difficulty uploading because the files were large. Here they are, showing mouths munching, detail of the speckled bodies and colour differences, eye detail and some poo. Watch out for the mouths at the start of the first clip. They look a bit like mini sharks to me.

And here are some shorter clips starring a couple of tadpoles close up.

Close up on tadpoles

I went to my local garden centre today, to pick up some compost for my veg seeds, and discovered a new aquatic section. This is great because, so far, I’ve been getting my pond things via post from Lincolnshire, not always with great results.

I had a voucher from my husband John for my birthday, so I bought some marginal plants (and a few other things I didn’t need, like a leather pouch for my secateurs – very handy). I came home with a plan to make a few changes to the pond, so I can disguise some areas where the liner is still showing at the edge. Of course, I’ve taken a few photos for you and a couple of videos to show the tadpoles enjoying the new additions.

The tadpoles have also been having a relaxing time among the pond weed roots, which are growing nicely now the weather has warmed up. Spot the new characters in the mix. A mayfly (naiad or nymph) is the star of the show in a couple of these and there are lots of tiny creatures too. I’ve Googled them and I think they are water fleas (Daphnea). If that’s what they are, it’s good news, because they are good food for tadpoles.

Finally today, a couple of odd clips. One is of tadpoles on a cucumber slice. Notice that they seem to poo everywhere. Puts you off cucumber a bit. And the other is a clip of a tadpole with weird markings working hard to eat some tadpole food off the surface of the pond. I wonder if this will be distinctive when s/he is a frog, or if it’s a parasite.
